What does it take to become an effective negotiator? According to popular belief, a set of innate qualities is required. However, the argument of several books on negotiation support that, with the right instruments, everyone can become a successful negotiator. These two perspectives are merely crude caricatures of reality. Sophisticated negotiators have the ability to identify critical pieces of information that allow the unraveling of the negotiation puzzle. The recognition of typical negotiation patterns allows them to diagnose problems quickly and accurately. While these qualities are partially innate, they are greatly developed through experience.

Luís Almeida Costa is a Full Professor and Vice-President of the Faculty Council at the Nova School of Business and Economics. He also collaborates with INSEAD, where he has taught extensively over the past twenty-five years, as well as with the Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management (Université Libre de Bruxelles) and the Haute École de Gestion de Fribourg. He taught for around ten years at IMD Business School, where he created and directed the executive program Negotiating for Value Creation (NVC).Luís Almeida Costa holds a Ph.D. and an M.Sc. in Business Administration from INSEAD, and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the Católica Lisbon School of Business and Economics. His research, teaching, and consulting work have focused on the fields of Strategy and Negotiation. He has published extensively in leading international academic journals, such as Strategic Management Journal, Strategy Science, Journal of Economics and Management Strategy, Journal of Business, International Journal of Industrial Organization, and Organization Studies. Luís Almeida Costa has led numerous consulting projects and delivered hundreds of executive seminars for companies and public sector organizations across Europe, Brazil, Africa, the Middle East, India, and Southeast Asia.
